"Born of Smoke and Fire," the Metal Men were DC's most tragic heroes. Far from being cold and emotionless automatons, inventor Doctor Will Magnus gave them an eerie verisimilitude of life. These sharp, likeable characters--every bit as well-defined as Marvel's Fantastic Four-- sacrificed themselves over and over again to save mankind. From their first appearance in Showcase #37: March/April, 1962, the Metal Men were an instant success.

Four months after their last Showcase appearance, the Metal Men received their own series. Featuring the same great art team of Ross Andru and Mike Esposito (then current Wonder Woman artists, and later the artists for Spider-Man), the book started out strong, using the same formula of likeable characters, comedy, and tragedy.
